Before I began to write about starting a home business, I was naturally curious to see what other sites had to offer. And it was as I expected.

Here’s what I noticed: On one site, they were selling a manual about how to start your own business. I looked at the table of contents and noticed that the LAST chapter was titled, “Is A Medical Billing Career Right for You.”

As far as I’m concerned, this should be the very first chapter, not the last. A medical billing home business is a rewarding career but it is certainly not for everyone. The slick online ads and scams won’t tell you that. They just want you to buy their courses, books, software, etc and make false promises they can't keep.

On this site, I have tried to cut through the smoke and give you the straight story. I don't promise you the moon. What I do promise is that if you have patience, perseverance, and you are willing to work hard, you can create a profitable medical billing home business. There are great resources available about planning, costs, and marketing if you are serious about starting a home business.

But, first things first. Before you spend your time and money, it’s critical to know if medical billing is something you will LIKE to do. If you have never done medical billing before, see if a medical billing career is right for you. If you are convinced that you have the right personality traits and that a medical billing home business is a good career choice for you, let’s move on.

At this point, you would probably expect me to talk about training courses; coding and billing, using software, steps to start your business, etc. After all, that’s what you see on all the other sites. However, in my professional opinion, a discussion of training courses is putting the cart before the horse. I’m going to do things a little backwards by jumping right into the hardest part of starting a home business: finding clients. Take a look at the many ways to find medical billing employment.

Many medical billers that start their own home businesses have previous experience in a medical office. Naturally, your own background will determine the next important steps which are education and training.

Other things to consider.... What will be your working environment? Will you use desktop software or consider doing your medical billing online.

Once you decide on a work environment, you will want to develop a medical billing contract.

And the most important question ...... how much do I charge?

A business plan may be helpful in this regard.

As you can see, there is a lot of work to be done to start a medical billing home business. If you stick with it, you can be successful.

So don’t be overwhelmed. And remember ....

You know how you eat an elephant?

......one bite

at a time.
